WINDSTORM, TEMPEST, HAIL, FLOOD AND/OR LANDSLIDE CLAUSE

Ini bunyi di dalam polis kendaraan “It is hereby noted and agreed that, subject to additional premium, this insurance is extended with coverage against loss and/or damage to the insured motor vehicle that is directly caused by windstrom, tempest, hail, flood, inundation and/or landslide.
Deductible: 10% from the appvoed amount of loss at minimum of Rp. 500,000.- for each event.”

Mengapa? Karena asuransi mobil standar (baik All Risk/Comprehensive maupun TLO) secara default TIDAK menjamin kerusakan akibat bencana alam!

Berikut adalah penjelasan detail dan cara kerjanya.

Intisari Klausul (Bagaimana Cara Kerjanya?)

    • Windstorm & Tempest (Angin topan & badai)
    • Hail (Hujan es)
    • Flood & Inundation (Banjir & genangan air)
    • Landslide (Tanah longsor)

Skenario 1: Kerugian Kecil (Terkena Batas Minimal)

  • Kejadian: Saat terjadi genangan air (banjir selutut), Anda nekat menerobos. Mobil selamat dan mesin aman, tapi bemper depan bawah Anda patah karena dorongan air.
  • Biaya Perbaikan (Klaim Disetujui): Rp 2.000.000.

Skenario 2: Kerugian Besar (Terkena Potongan 10%)

  • Biaya Perbaikan (Klaim Disetujui): Rp 80.000.000.
  • Perhitungan Asuransi:

We often refer to this as the “Natural Disaster Extension Clause (Flood & Storm)”.

It is one of the most crucial extensions for car owners in Indonesia, especially for those living in areas prone to flooding or in mountainous regions. The reason is that standard car insurance (whether Comprehensive or Total Loss Only) DOES NOT automatically cover damage caused by natural disasters.

The Core Concept (How It Works)

This clause changes an exclusion into a standard coverage, but it comes with specific terms and conditions:

  1. Subject to Additional Premium: This is a rider or an add-on. You must pay an extra premium when purchasing the policy for your car to be protected from these risks.
  2. Disaster Coverage: This clause specifically protects your car from direct damage caused by:
    • Windstorm & Tempest
    • Hail
    • Flood & Inundation
    • Landslide
  3. The Deductible Rule (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT): This is the part that often surprises clients. In standard car insurance, if your car is scratched in a simple collision, you only pay a flat deductible (usually Rp 300,000 per incident). However, for natural disasters, the rule is different:
    • You must bear 10% of the total repair cost.
    • If that 10% figure is smaller than Rp 500,000, you are still required to pay a minimum of Rp 500,000.

Claim Simulation Examples

Let’s see how the “10% or minimum Rp 500,000” deductible rule works in a real-world scenario.

Scenario 1: Small Damage (Minimum Limit Applies)

  • The Incident: During a light flood (knee-deep water), you decide to drive through. Your car and engine are safe, but your lower front bumper breaks due to the water pressure.
  • Repair Cost (Approved Claim): Rp 2,000,000.
  • Insurance Calculation:
    • 10% of Rp 2 Million = Rp 200,000.
    • Since Rp 200,000 is smaller than the minimum limit (Rp 500,000), the deductible you pay is Rp 500,000.
  • Final Outcome: The insurance company pays the workshop Rp 1,500,000, and you pay Rp 500,000 at the workshop cashier.

Scenario 2: Large Damage (10% Deduction Applies)

  • The Incident: You park your car in an apartment basement. A sudden flash flood occurs, completely submerging your car. The interior is ruined, the electronics fail, and the engine requires a total overhaul.
  • Repair Cost (Approved Claim): Rp 80,000,000.
  • Insurance Calculation:
    • 10% of Rp 80 Million = Rp 8,000,000.
    • Since Rp 8 Million is far greater than Rp 500,000, the insurer uses this 10% figure as the deductible.
  • Final Outcome: The insurance company covers costs amounting to Rp 72,000,000, and you must pay your share of the deductible, which is Rp 8,000,000.

Professional Advice: Many clients are upset when their car is flooded because they are suddenly asked to pay millions of rupiah (as in Scenario 2), when they assumed the deduction was only Rp 300,000 like a standard collision claim. Knowing this 10% rule is essential so that you are financially prepared.

One last golden tip: If your car is trapped in floodwater and stalls, NEVER attempt to restart the engine. Starting a submerged car can cause Water Hammer (pistons bending as water enters the combustion chamber). Most insurers will reject a Water Hammer claim, as it is considered “negligence by the driver who worsened the situation,” even if you have this flood clause!
